It started with the first people migrating to the Great Lakes around the 1400s, then the fur trade in 1600s, commercial fishing in 1800s, to logging the end of the 19th century to agriculture. These murals depicted human's evolving relationship with this area over the last 500 years. There were two more beautiful murals inside the visitors center. It was very informative with many exhibits telling the history of the area and Lake Superior. We then went to the Northern Great Lakes Visitor's Center. Second, they almost looked three dimensional by the way the scene extended around the corners of the buildings. What we found interesting that made these murals outstanding was, first of all, they were so large covering the whole side of the building from the street level to the top of the building. There was the Veterans Mural that is in honor of all the Ashland area military men and women who served our nation in wars and conflicts. The lower section includes 21 "postcards" telling the history of the varies uses of the structure over the years. ![]() The Ashland Oredock Mural which was built in 1916, the top portion of the mural is "to scale" painting of the Oredock itself. A few of the murals we saw were the Ashland National Bank as it appeared in 1892. There were 12 of these beautiful murals, all which were outside with the exception of one being in a McDonalds. We went on a walking tour of the Murals in the City that tell a very detailed history of the area. Today Ashland is restored and is on the National Historic Register. In its day the town shipped out millions of tons of virgin pine, iron ore, and brownstone, which was carried by rail. ![]() We then went into Ashland which is a beautiful city with the main road running beside Lake Superior. We got a special tour of the ship and a crew member explained what their purpose was and how they went about it. One of our group asked if we could take a tour of the ship. This ship analyzes the fishery of Lake Superior. There was a US Geological Survey ship docked right next to the campground. Here Doug was walking around out there trying to get the electric back on. They had an electrician come in and fix it. There was 120 volts from the side of the box to the water line. There was a short in the pedestal electric box. It ended up that it was a dangerous situation. When we got back from breakfast we told the campground manager and he had the maintenance man check it out. Clarence and Sandy were cooking breakfast of blueberry pancakes and sausage at the pavilion for our group. Doug couldn't get it back on so we plugged into Chris and Nancy's pedistal. The weather was beautiful when we arrived. It is a very nice campground right on the water of Lake Superior.
